It was a sad day for snooker when I heard the news of the passing away of Alex. He certainly was an enigma, splitting opinion of him straight down the middle.

As far as I am concerned I would like to say a big thank you. Alex made the modern game – and with his style of play - made the game exciting and watchable. I don’t believe the money that came into the game, would have happened without him.

The word genius is used too much in sport today, but when I think back to Alex, and the performances he produced - is there another word for him?

There are plenty of stories about Alex that are folklore in the game, but for now a thank you will suffice.

Sell out at the Crucible

The first Snooker Legends evening at the Crucible, billed as a night of nostalgia, was an instant sell out. With not only Alex Higgins’ return but also that of the 1980 World Champion Cliff Thorburn, the 1991 World Champion John Parrott and the peoples champion Jimmy ‘Whirlwind’ White. The blood red set, inspired by the old Embassy colours and some old footage of Cliff, Alex and Jimmy set the scene and when ‘The Entertainer’ and ‘Pot Black’ music played – it was time to begin.

Chris Evans Sporting Challenge!

Chris Evans’ sporting challenge held at the Royal Automobile Club on March 10 was snooker. Jimmy White and JV teaching Chris and Jonny the basics of snooker with a trick shot break off decider – and a surprise outcome of the contest!

Enter the ECC Open Individual Tournament

March/April 2010. The tournament, which was last won by Craig Steadman, is open to any amateur or professional and is limited to 40 entries. Full details of the tournament and entry forms at www.eccit.co.uk.

Some of the best amateurs in the North West enter so competition is tough!

I hope you will enjoy the new look site – dedicated to all things snooker.

The site includes News, latest results, my own tournament tips – as well as the old favourites such as the snooker clinic, competitions and features which should be interesting as well as fun and entertaining.

Recently launched, the new ‘An Evening with John Virgo’ for those club nights or events – my calendar is usually up to date so you can check for events in your area or for a more bespoke event, just send us your enquiry.

Tip Tip!

The usual cause with a tip wearing down on one side more than the other, is holding the cue in the same place when you play your shot. A lot of people have this problem, including myself. Keep on top of this by using sandpaper to keep it level.
