The Celtic Manor Resort
Newport, Gwent, Wales
August 2003

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of visiting The Celtic Manor Resort. I was speaking at a corporate day for Bovis. Unfortunately I could not get there in time to play the Golf Course but when I arrived and saw how windy it was I thought it was for the best.

I have played the course a few times and have been very impressed. All the facilities are second to none. The staff are very friendly and as soon as you arrive they make you feel special.

This is to be the venue for the 2010 Ryder Cup. Rumour has it that the owner Terry Matthews has spent £40 million to bring the Golf Course up to scratch. An admirable gesture and one that will be tremendous for Golf in Wales.

Well that enough of the commercial! After speaking at the dinner, a few guys wondered if I would have a game of snooker with them in the bar. We had a pleasant evening and I was only to pleased to agree.

You can imagine my disappointment when I saw the snooker table and the equipment. The table only had five pockets, one of the middle pockets had no leather on it, and the bar at the back of the pocket stopped the ball dropping! The three cues, that were usable, had tips that fitted over the end of the cue making them look like menthol cigarettes!!

After playing a couple of shots I realised that if I played anymore I would look like a complete idiot. Not too hard for me after working with Jim Davidson for twelve years!!

Anyway I managed a couple of trick shots to keep my reputation in tacked. Everybody seemed to enjoy the evening regardless. However as a snooker player it was a little bit insulting to the game and it would not cost that much to put the table and cues right and in keeping with the other facilities.

Just a note to Mr Matthews, I know that Tiger Woods likes a game of snooker and if you want to get good reviews from the great man, spend some money on the snooker facilities!!

It is not the first time I have gone to a Golf Club and been less than impressed with the snooker room. So if you are a member of a golf club and not to impressed with the snooker facilities let me know as I know plenty of table fitters and there is sure to be one in your area.

Now naturally, it would be unjust not to give Celtic Manor the opportunity to defend the situation, so you can click here to read their response.
